If you think that the police don't respect law

The police can make mistakes: racist remarks, violence, arbitrary arrest... It is important to react even if you think it is a waste of time. If you are the victim of such a mistake, you must lodge a complaint and contact organisms that will help you.The classical penal methods give you four possibilities to lodge a complaint against the police:

- Lodge a complaint with the police: obviously, it is advised not to go to the same service one is lodging a complaint against.

- Lodge a complaint with the Crown Prosecutor. He will make the necessary enquiries that will lead either to the submission of the case to the Examining Magistrate, to the transmission of the case to a judge or decision of non-prosecution.

- The victim constitutes himself private party with an investigating judge. This method is a little more expensive but a judge will examine the case.

- Contact the Standing Police Monitoring Committee. One of the missions of this service is enquire on the basis of complaints lodged against the malfunctioning of police services and of irregularities committed by police officers.

Special organizations have the most influence and they will advise and help you.

In case of racism, it is advised to contact MRAX who are specialized in this field.

For other complaints, contact the Human Rights League or the Centre for Equal Opportunities and Opposition to Racism who have excellent jurists.
